The latest edition of the newsletter includes my favorite recommendations for visiting 🌴 San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I’m also sharing some ideas for celebrating 🍁fall. I always think of each new season as a fresh start. I love going for a run and savoring the cooler mornings. I am intentional about a few things in the fall, including shopping at farmer’s markets, baking everything pumpkin, a new candle, fresh flowers, a playlist, and reading a good suspense thriller by a warm fire.

Sins of Our Mother (Netflix): True crime fans might already be familiar with the names Tylee Ryan and J. J. Vallow, young siblings who were found dead in June 2020. Sins of Our Mother is the surreal story of how their mother, Lori Vallow, came to be indicted for their murder.

Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee (Netflix): McAfee is the inventor of one of the most successful pieces of software of all time: McAfee Anti-Virus. At his peak, John McAfee was worth $100 million. When his neighbor was murdered, McAfee went on the run and invited a film crew with him. With access to hundreds of hours of never-before-broadcast footage of McAfee as the authorities pursue him, this is the definitive story of a larger-than-life character, a man who ran for President, escaped from prison multiple times, and claimed to have hacked the world.

Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist (Netflix): In 2013, Deadspin broke a story about Notre Dame football player Manti Te’o. A skilled linebacker, Te’o had made headlines during his senior year for bravely playing through the pain of losing his beloved grandmother and his girlfriend on the same night. The only problem was the dead girlfriend never existed. Te’o had been catfished, and when Deadspin published its piece, the media went into a frenzy, and Te’o’s life changed forever.

The fascinating two-part documentary explores all angles of the story—how and why the catfishing happened, how it was exposed, the impact it had on Te’o, and why so many media outlets got it wrong in the first place.

Baked and Wired: This darling cafe has the best cupcakes in town. But they’ve upped their coffee game with housemade macadamia milk and beans from Lost Sock. The cafe is located in Georgetown.

Fall To-Do List

I put together a fall to-do list with some ideas for the upcoming season. I also share some fun things I'd love to do this fall. I hope it inspires you to put together a list of your own to celebrate this time of year.

If you are a list maker like me, try the 52 Lists Project Journal. It’s divided into seasons and then weeks. Each week you are asked to list something. At the page's bottom is a “take action” suggestion. There’s also space to make your lists. You can print out a sample collection of the lists here to help you get started.

I also love using a Bullet Journal. The Bullet Journal is a customizable and forgiving organization system. It can be your to-do list, sketchbook, notebook, and diary, but most likely, it will be all the above. Here’s how to get started using a Bullet Journal. Are you registered to vote? Use this site to check. Some states also have same-day registration, but the requirements vary. Here’s a list of registration deadlines and requirements. To be safe, always double-check your own local election official’s office or website for any recent changes. This link will direct you to it. You can check your registration here or on your local Secretary of State’s website. If you are a U.S. citizen abroad or in the military, you can find your information via the Overseas Vote Foundation. You can also volunteer to be a poll worker. Each state recruits poll workers differently. Typically signing up to be a poll worker is done with your local election office. In some places, this is a county election office, but it may also be a registrar or clerk at the county or local level.

I also love the idea of a baked potato bar for tailgating. Find out how to bake potatoes for a big group. Tip: don’t bake the potatoes in foil.
I’ve been handwriting more letters and sending books to friends. USPS offers a discounted rate for packages that include books.
I’m also focused on being consistent with my morning routine, which includes getting ☀️ sunlight.
According to Dr. Andrew Huberman, you need to view sunlight by going outside within 30-60 minutes of waking. Do that again in the late afternoon, before sunset. If you wake up before the sun is out and want to be awake, turn on artificial lights and then go outside once the sun rises.
On bright cloudless days: view morning and afternoon sun for 10 min; cloudy days: 20 min; very overcast days 30-60 min. Consider an artificial daytime simulator source if you live someplace with very minimal light.
Don’t wear sunglasses 😎 for this practice if you safely can, but contact lenses and eyeglasses are fine.
No, you don’t have to look directly at the sun and never look at ANY light so bright it is painful to view! You can’t wear a brimmed hat or sunglasses, remain in the shade, and expect to “wake up” your circadian clock.

2.  In everyday to-do lists, include tasks you enjoy, like reading a book or watching a TV program.

3.  Don't be afraid to share your list with others for their perspective, feedback, and encouragement.

4.  Be creative. Use color, pictures, or a unique design to make your lists feel more exciting and appealing.

5.  Boost your happiness regularly by listing three things you are grateful for daily.

6.  At the end of each day, choose one to three things you will work on tomorrow and let go of the rest.

San Juan City Guide

The capital of Puerto Rico is one of the hottest travel destinations in the Caribbean. It’s bursting with culture, history, and some of the best restaurants in Puerto Rico. I’ll let you on a little secret, do not miss visiting the islands of Vieques and Culebra. Flamenco Beach on Culebra is rated one of the top beaches in the world.

If you are visiting for the day, crack a coconut and head to the beach. After a relaxing day of sun and fun, enjoy a sunset cruise followed by dinner in Old San Juan. Then head to one of the famous nightclubs and cue the Salsa dancing.

If the beach is not your thing, head to Old San Juan for coffee and breakfast at one of the cafes. The coffee in San Juan is among the best anywhere. Most of the really good coffee shops are in Old San Juan. Hop on the Old San Juan Trolley for a tour. Don’t miss the Mercado Agrícola de Viejo San Juan farmer’s market on Saturday mornings.

Up for adventure? Rent a car and drive to El Yunque Rain Forest. After hiking the rain forest, stop at Piñones. This outdoor area is complete with roadside eateries selling a variety of frituras (the traditional fried delicacies) and pinchos (skewers of grilled meat). A palm-lined boardwalk is open for walking and biking runs through a mangrove forest and along the coastline. It’s a fantastic spot to get a piña colada and watch a Caribbean sunset. You can rent bikes by the hour at the COPI building near the Boca de Cangrejos bridge. Soleil Beach Club, a rustic beachfront restaurant and bar, offers a free shuttle service to the area from most hotels in San Juan.

COFFEE

Café Comunión: This cafe is home to Puerto Rico’s National Latte Art Champion.

Finca Cialitos: Cialitos: Located in Old San Juan, the cafe often has a line out the door on weekends. The coffee is sourced from the café owners’ estate and sometimes dried on the roof itself, making it worthwhile to pick up a bag of beans as souvenirs or to sip at home.

Filtrado: Gorgeous coffee done right.

Café Regina: In Ocean Park, a perfect breakfast place with excellent espresso and coffee drinks. The pastries are also delicious.

Café con Cé: Located near Ocean Park with outdoor seating.

Caficultura: The coffee is good here if you are looking for a cafe for breakfast.

EAT

Caficultura: A cute little cafe for breakfast near the cruise ship terminal. The coffee and pancakes are delicious. *GF menu

La Santurcina: La Santurcina has many creative pizza topping combinations, including beet pepperoni!

Fidela: The crust is better at Fidela.

Il Sole: Pizza parlor in the Hotel San Juan is another great one.

Pío Pío: Brilliant small plates and wine program, with the best vegetarian and vegan options you’ll find in town.

Bodega Chic: It’s perfect for brunch.

Spiga: For breakfast and lunch during the week in Old San Juan, you can’t beat it. Sourdough is made in-house. The Spiga salad is delicious.

Vianda: A perfect spot for special occasions.

Taberna Medalla: It’s a great spot for oysters and mussels.

Leña Eh: A popular food truck in Miramar Food Truck Park.

Cocina al Fondo: For Puerto Rican food in the metro area, no one does it like chef Natalia Vallejo.

Cafeteria Mallorca: It is the oldest standing diner on the island.

Lote 23: A menagerie of hip food trucks, airstreams, and vendor stalls. There’s also live music and plenty of picnic tables.

Los Yeyo' la Casa Del Mofongo: This is the spot to visit for traditional Puerto food like Rican mofongo (mashed plantains) and empanadas.

Bodega Chic: A cafe serving French cuisine.

Deaverdura: A colorful space serving up traditional Caribbean meals.

Nam Pla Street Food Co.: This is your spot if you are craving Asian food.

Peko Peko: The best Raman in town.

Mai Pen Rai: The best Thai food in San Juan.

Vianda: A popular farm-to-table concept restaurant with a great cocktail menu.

Berlingeri: The best plant-based organic restaurant in San Juan.

El Vino Crudo: The wines are fantastic.

El Batey: Just an extraordinary place.

El Boquerón: A dive bar’s dive bar where you can watch sports and order food from the restaurant next door.

Mono Stereo: A popular dive bar.

Machete: A fantastic cocktail bar with an excellent food program in Santurce.

Hermanos Lucca: Craft beer and natural wine bar in Santurce with great music.

Los 3 Cuernos: It’s a perfect first stop for a night out in Old San Juan.

Pio Pio: A champagne and snack bar serving luxurious bubbly, wine, and caviar-laden bites, eclectic menu and interiors are equally Instagram-worthy.

173 Grados: A popular cocktail bar in Condado.

La Penultima: An artsy industrial chic bar that serves local beers and well-crafted cocktails.

La Taberna Lupuloa: A Puerto Rican craft beer bar serving local brews.

Panoteca: Lines are out the door on Saturday mornings and sold out daily for a good reason.

Vía Lactea: The best non-dairy ice cream!

Señor Paleta: Another mom-and-pop with plenty of non-dairy options.

Anita’s Gelato: This is a chain, but if you’re in Old San Juan, it’s popular with non-dairy options.

Spiga: Spiga is a beloved Old San Juan gem that bakes its sourdough loaves daily.

FOOD MARKET

Mercado Agrícola de Viejo San Juan: Every Saturday morning by El Morro, a fort from the Spanish colonial times and a national park, a dozen or so vendors line up at this farmers’ market to sell not just locally grown produce, piques flavored with local fruits, giant tropical flowers, and vanilla beans, but plant-based milk, desserts, and vegan sushi. Grab some food to enjoy on a long walk around Old San Juan or a picnic by the beach.

Luca: A lovely lifestyle boutique.

Sunset Sail

El Escambrón is the most picturesque beach in San Juan. There you can do anything from snorkeling and swimming to having a romantic stroll.

Rent a Bike

Castillo San Felipe del Morro: One of the oldest and largest Spanish-built forts.

DAY TRIPS

El Yunque Rain Forest

Rincón: A surfing town.

City of Ponce In this charming southern city, you can visit a famous castle, tour standout art museums, and stroll the streets of the town square Plaza Las Delicias.

Anna Wigmore Natural Health Institute (Rincón): The Anna Wigmore Natural Health Institute offers one and two-week programs and workshops for a healthier lifestyle.

Culebra: A beautiful island off the coast of Puerto Rico and is home to Flamenco Beach, one of the best beaches in the world.

Vieques: Another beautiful island off the coast of Puerto Rico. Hotel accommodations are available on Vieques.

You can also take a ferry to Vieques and Culebra or a small plane. You can take a ferry from Ceiba. Ceiba is about a 90-minute drive from San Juan. Purchase tickets online. You’ll have to pay a little extra for a service fee, but holding your spot is worth it. Here’s the ferry schedule from Ceiba to Culebra. For each island, some boats make round trips every two hours, starting at 4:00 a.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m.

Small planes leave San Juan several times a day. Tickets range from $60 to $90 per trip.
